“I will say at once, quite firmly, that the best grounding for education is the Latin grammar.” – Dorothy Sayers, “The Lost Tools of Learning
The study of Latin fosters deep and critical thinking, and requires great attention to detail. This, in turn, trains students in the practice of precise logical thinking.
Studying Latin dramatically improves a student’s vocabulary, and knowledge of Latin prepares students for success in all spoken languages – not only the Romance languages, but also German, Russian, and others that use complex grammatical forms.
What’s more, the study of Latin allows students to connect to their own history. Latin is the mother tongue of Western civilization, and of the Church itself.
For these reasons, Latin is a cornerstone of the classical curriculum at OLMC.
With three years of daily Latin instruction in middle school, our students graduate eighth grade ready to work with some of Western Civilization’s greatest works in the original language.
