Profile of an OLMC Teacher
Teaching in a classical Catholic school is not merely a profession, but a commission. Faculty are entrusted with nothing less than the formation of saints, guiding students by the orienting stars of truth, goodness, and beauty towards friendship with God himself.
This work calls for self-gift, witness, and a deep love for each child as a divine and unrepeatable masterpiece. Like any true vocation, it requires honesty, humility, patience, and perseverance. Our truest measure of satisfaction will not be found in the immediate results of our students’ academic achievement - though those results matter a great deal - but in the quiet yet enduring cultivation of young minds, bodies, hearts, and souls into true flourishing. OLMC teachers participate in a sacred mission, shaping lives that are ordered not only towards earthly success and happiness, but also towards eternal sanctity.
Our teachers cultivate six faculties to reach that lofty height, deploying each in a manner consistent with the age, grade, level, and specific goals for the students they teach:
FORM TRUTH-SEEKERS: Our teachers guide students to think deeply and pursue wisdom, teaching them how to ask meaningful questions and delight in what is true. They develop in students a healthy detachment from personal opinion by probing assertions and fostering disciplined dialogue, training them to think critically, listen attentively, and open their minds to correction. Our teachers model intellectual humility by following an argument wherever it leads, showing students that it is far more important to love truth than be proven right.
PREPARE SERVANTS OF THE COMMON GOOD: Our teachers form students for mission by instilling responsibility and a sense of calling, equipping them to develop and use their gifts in service to others. They guide students to embrace God’s plans for their lives, helping them recognize that they have been created with and for a purpose and that God is relying on them to bring earth to heaven and heaven to earth.
CULTIVATE BEAUTY: Our teachers form students to participate in God’s artistry by fostering wonder, shaping their tastes, and habituating their attention in the direction of creative excellence in every academic subject. Through exposure to great works and careful practice, they teach students to create with order, harmony, rhythm, and meaning.
SHAPE GREAT COMMUNICATION: Our teachers prepare students to communicate well by forming habits of listening with prudence and compassion while speaking and writing with precision. They lead rich discussions and insist on clarity of thought, teaching students to advocate with conviction, engage disagreement rationally, and seek understanding first.
FORGE COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP: Our teachers develop students’ leadership skills by entrusting them with appropriate responsibility, gently and consistently calling them to virtue, and modeling integrity. They impress upon students the importance of choosing what is right over what is easy and hold them accountable to standards of excellence.
NURTURE CHARITY: Our teachers awaken authentic love by directing students’ hearts towards rightly-ordered worship, self-gift, and communion with others. They cultivate the strength to love through sacrifice and help them develop habits of patience, mercy, and devotion. Through both expectation and example, our teachers model the reality that charity is a choice.
