Our Houses
We value friendly competition and genuine camaraderie, so we have a system in which each student is placed into one of four Houses, named after the Four Evangelists. Throughout the year, the Houses vie with one another in academic and athletic competitions, earning valuable points and prizes along the way. This system fosters small group communities in which students feel known and valued. For the younger students, it allows them to take risks in a supportive and encouraging environment. For the older students, it gives them incomparable opportunities to develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime.
Itβs not just about competition, though. The Houses also undertake many works of service, both inside and outside the school. The relationships forged by serving others together are authentic and lasting.
The crest: Marian colors and a cockerel with outstretched wings, with 3 stars (for the three stars of Our Lady of Mt Carmel) on the wings.
Matthew β a Jesse tree with Marian crown and colors; this is a more abstract representation of the human descent of Jesus represented by the winged man.
Mark -- the lion, but shown a bit more abstractly; 2 lions ('voice crying--roaring--in the wilderness') flanking a stylized representation of a river and thus suggesting the baptism at the Jordan.
Luke -- the usual winged ox, but with a canton (square quarter) at the top left suggesting a painted panel with a fleur-de-lys, representing his legendary work as an iconographer; can also suggest his large contribution (more than a quarter) to the New Testament in his Gospel and Acts. The red ermine spots suggest both purity (Marian) and also blood droplets for the sacrifices in the temple described at the start of his gospel, which is also why he is symbolized by an ox.
John -- Tau cross for John at the foot of the cross, and a variation of his serpent-rising-from-poisoned-chalice symbol that can also recall the bronze serpent. Marian colors.
